Equipment.

  1. Purchase two fresh vanilla beans sealed in a glass tube stamped with an expiration date from a bulk grocery store where Madagascar beans are frequently found. Advance to the internet for an out-of-the-ordinary selection.
  2. Select an attractive kitchenware 14 to 16 oz glass bottle with a well-made tight-fit screw-on or flip lid with a rubber seal to avoid leaks.
  3. Vodka is the perfect alcohol to start with, to allow observation of color change over the months and for the vanilla bean flavor to come forth without the taste of the alcohol interfering. Most other hard liquors will tint the vanilla flavoring and color quickly. Consider it as a good option for next time to experiment.

Directions.

  1. Pour 12 ounces of vodka into the glass bottle allowing an air pocket for mixing.
  2. With a sharp paring knife and clean plastic cutting board, gently splice each bean leaving one side intact.
  3. Carefully drop the beans into the alcohol.
