Purchase Slippery Elm inner bark (not powder product) from a trusted herb seller.

A lengthy soaking process will soften the bark and shorten the cooking time.

Take Slippery Elm separately from all other supplements and food to ensure adequate nutrient absorption.

Consume only the liquid of the finished product, not the residue at the bottom of the container.

Yield: Approximately 7 cups

Serving size: Start with a teaspoon based on tolerance, and advance the amount as needed based on personal requirements (start with a 1/4 teaspoon for cats and dogs).

Time to make: 6 to 8 hours (approximate time the inner bark requires to soak liquid).

Ingredients:

1 cup of Slippery Elm herb (inner bark).

8 cups of water.

Kitchen tools:

  • Cooking pot with a tight-fitting lid
  • Large glass dish
  • Large spoon
  • Small mesh colander

Directions:

  1. Add Slippery Elm inner bark to 8 cups of water in a cooking pot. Mix herb until it is coated with liquid).
  2. Cover with a tight-fitting lid and bring to a boil.
  3. Turn the heat off and let the mixture sit for 2 to 5 hours with the lid in place.
  4. Bring to a boil again, then turn to low heat for a simmer for 2 hours to separate.
  5. Remove from heat and pour the mixture through the colander into a clean dish (liquid will be slightly thick).
  6. Cool and pour through a funnel into a jar with a tight-fitting screw on the lid. Note the residue and liquid will separate.
  7. Keep refrigerated.
