Facts.
Low blood sugar levels while driving can lead to a potentially dangerous situation. As symptoms of shakiness and fatigue worsen, a person’s level of confusion will increase.
Numbers to commit to memory.
- Symptomatic hypoglycemia is glucose levels that are less than 70mg/dL.
- Significant hypoglycemia is a glucose level of less than 54mg/dL.
Take action.
- If the blood glucose result is low, immediately address it by consuming 15 grams of a high-carbohydrate snack or beverage.
- Wait at least 15 minutes after ingesting the food or drink to assess mental and physical status, then recheck sugar levels.
- Another 15 grams of carbohydrate may be necessary if blood sugar has not risen sufficiently; wait another 15 minutes to access results.
